Hungry for a little more? Here are some quick brain bites to get you through the day.
Phantom Limb Pain
Sometimes, people who have an arm or a leg removed, can still feel it hurting, even after it is gone.
- The pain can be really hard to treat
- It happens because the brain rewires its connections in a wrong way
- Sometimes the nerve endings are damaged too, and it hurts
-
The most interesting way to stop the pain is by showing your brain that you still have your arm or leg - using a mirror box

How are memories made?
We have short-term and long-term memories in our brain. Here, we explore how long-term memories are stored
- Each memory is made up of lots of small details
- Things like, where you were, what you saw, what you could smell, how you were feeling
- This means brain cells all over your brain have to be connected
- Brain cells learn to keep those small details by changing themselves to make it easier to remember next time
-
This change is what we show here, and it happens to groups of brain cells to keep one memory (although those brain cells can remember lots of things if they want to)

Why does alcohol make our brain feel drunk?
Alcohol gives us its effects because it changes how our brain cells work. It dampens down brain signals – helping with social anxiety, but also with movement, memories, and critical thinking
- The different effects we have depend on the area of the brain
- Eventually, alcohol can stop memories from being created and so we don't remember events from the night
- Then we get....the hangover
-
Our body breaks down the alcohol in 2 different ways. One of which is slower, and makes us feel terrible
